Desktop files & local copies

Know where a desktop World lives and how to open a portable World file.

Browser editing requires a purchased license and Workspace sync. Desktop writing needs an active trial or license, without sync. Reading, search, and export of available work remain accessible. Check access requirements.

Get the desktop app

Available for macOS, Windows, and Linux. Choose Your account in the browser access dialog, or open your account in the web app, and use its Desktop app section. Sign in there if asked, then choose the installer for your computer.

Desktop writing needs an active seven-day trial or a purchased license, but no sync subscription. Downloading the installer does not transfer your Worlds; export browser-local work separately and follow the import steps below.

To look for a newer version, use Check for updates in Settings, or Check for Updates… in the app menu: the Plotscribe application menu on macOS, or the Plotscribe menu at the top left of the window on Windows and Linux.

The World folder

A file-backed desktop World uses a folder containing project.plotscribe and any associated media. The World file carries the project’s structure and writing. Keep the folder together when backing it up or moving it, particularly if you have added images.

The desktop app maintains its working data and writes local files for file-backed Worlds. Let pending saves finish before copying the folder or quitting. Avoid simultaneously editing the World file by hand and in the app.

Open or import a World

  1. For an existing World folder, choose Open folder in the desktop Worlds list and select the folder containing project.plotscribe.
  2. For a standalone downloaded .plotscribe file, choose Import World and select the file. Plotscribe creates a local destination for the imported World.
  3. For a downloaded ZIP, extract it first, keep its media in place, then use Open folder on the extracted World folder.

Local availability and sync are separate

A local file does not require a sync subscription to remain readable. Linked Worlds can also appear as Online only. Download/open the World while connected and verify its local availability before relying on it offline.

Removing a managed download is not the same action as deleting the cloud World. Read the specific command’s confirmation, and keep a separate export before either action.
