Characters, places & other entities

Create records, aliases, profiles, and images that stay connected to the writing.

Browser editing requires a purchased license and Workspace sync. Desktop writing needs an active trial or license, without sync. Reading, search, and export of available work remain accessible. Check access requirements.

Create an entity

  1. Open Entities in the sidebar (Ctrl/Cmd+3) and choose New entity, or select a name in the manuscript and choose the New entity prompt that appears beside it.
  2. Give the record its canonical name, then use Add a type. Characters and places are useful starting points, but other things in your story can have records too.
  3. Add aliases under Also called for other names used for the same entity. An alias belongs to that record; it is not a second character.
  4. Write the Overview in the record’s prose editor. Group longer reference material under headings, and add structured Details where they will be useful.

Build a useful profile

  • Use Details for named values, and pin the important ones so they show At a glance at the top of the record.
  • Starter templates (Choose a template or Add template) supply fields to fill in; they do not invent a biography or populate facts from the manuscript.
  • Use attached notes for research shared with other records or chapters, rather than copying the same text into each profile.
  • Add a portrait or reference image with the record’s image controls. Keep exported media with its World file when moving the project.
  • The POV toggle is an authored organizing flag. It is not an automatic per-chapter POV assignment or a guarantee that perspective continuity has been checked.

Follow references into the manuscript

The record’s In the manuscript section shows where the entity is referenced, with snippets that lead back to the writing. On the record’s full page, the Manuscript pane steps through mentions with Previous mention and Next mention. These views help you inspect use in context; they are not a generated story bible.

An unrecognized name may be an entity you have not filed yet. The Entities screen’s side panel, Nobody yet, lists names from the manuscript that match no record, with Make an entity or an offer to add the name as an alias. Decide which it needs rather than creating duplicate records for every spelling.

Rename and remove carefully

A record’s identity is separate from its displayed name. Changing the canonical name is not permission to rewrite every plain-text occurrence in the manuscript. Review aliases, linked fills, and prose after a rename.

Before deleting an entity, check relationships, locations, and chapter references. Missing targets may remain visible as unresolved references so you can repair them; deletion should not be treated as a bulk rewrite of the story.
