Frameworks & story beats

Use or author a structural pattern without forcing every story into the same outline.

Browser editing requires a purchased license and Workspace sync. Desktop writing needs an active trial or license, without sync. Reading, search, and export of available work remain accessible. Check access requirements.

Choose a framework

  1. In Plan, choose By plot line and open a plot line’s menu beside its name. Under Plot framework, choose Manage plot frameworks… to open Frameworks, and review those already in the World before creating another.
  2. Start from a built-in pattern under Start from, or create your own. A copy becomes your editable framework; it is not an immutable requirement.
  3. Use the plot line’s menu to choose the framework that belongs to that line. Different plot lines can follow different structures.

Edit beats rather than obey them

Use Edit beats… to name and describe the beats you want. The framework can also be renamed or duplicated. It represents your chosen pattern, not a score of whether the manuscript is good.

Use planning points to express how your story meets, changes, or ignores a beat. A framework does not generate the point’s description or write a chapter for you.

Frameworks are not Parts

A Part groups chapters in a manuscript. A framework supplies structural beats for a plot line. Removing or changing a framework is not the same operation as deleting a manuscript Part or its chapters.

Before removing a framework, review where it is used in the World and inspect the affected plot lines afterward. Keep a checkpoint before major planning changes.
